Does My Pet Really Need Anxiety Medication Before a Vet Visit?

Fear Free Care Is About More Than Medication.

One of the biggest misconceptions about pre-visit anxiety medication is that it’s the only tool available for anxious pets.

At Bridge Street Veterinary Hospital, medication is just one component of our Fear Free approach to reducing fear, anxiety, and stress.

Our goal is always to use the least intervention necessary to help your pet feel safe and comfortable.

For many pets, that starts with positive experiences.

Treats, Treats, and More Treats

Positive reinforcement is one of the foundations of Fear Free veterinary care.

Our team keeps a variety of treats on hand and uses rewards throughout the visit to help pets build positive associations with the veterinary hospital. We even have an entire cupboard dedicated to our patients’ favorite snacks.

Many pets quickly learn that visiting the veterinarian can be a rewarding experience.

Calming Pheromones

Our hospital and exam rooms are equipped with Adaptil® for dogs and Feliway® for cats.

These products use calming pheromones that mimic natural signals associated with comfort and security, helping many pets feel more relaxed during their visit.

Natural Calming Support

Some pets benefit from calming supplements such as Solliquin®.

Solliquin contains ingredients including L-theanine, Magnolia extract, and Whey Protein Concentrate that may help promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. Depending on your pet’s needs, these supplements may be used before veterinary visits or as part of an ongoing anxiety management plan.

When Medication Makes Sense

For pets with significant fear, anxiety, stress, or aggression, pre-visit pharmaceuticals can be incredibly beneficial.

These medications are prescribed specifically for your pet and are administered at home before the appointment. They are designed to reduce anxiety and improve comfort—not simply to make pets easier to handle.

Many owners are surprised by how much calmer and more comfortable their pet appears during the visit, and how much more positive the overall experience becomes.

Every Pet Is Different

Some pets need nothing more than a few treats and a gentle approach. Others benefit from pheromones, calming supplements, pre-visit medications, or a combination of strategies.

At Bridge Street Veterinary Hospital, our Fear Free Certified team works with each pet individually to create a plan that supports their emotional wellbeing while ensuring they receive the veterinary care they need. Learn more about Fear Free here.

The goal isn’t to sedate pets. The goal is to help them feel safe.
